The debt clock in NYC that calculates the total debt of the U.s ran out of digits yesterday

Yes, they needed to make more room for more numbers. For now they're taking the dollar sign out, but apparently next year there will be a new clock with space for 2 more digits. That's just excellent.

Sorry to say it, but doesnt look like its going to get any better. Both candidates are proposing ridiculous amounts of spending.

Dont get me wrong, I think a lot of it is needed given the current economic crisis we are in, but I just dont see much hope for that number going down anytime in the near future.

You know how Senator Ted Stevens R-Alaska (the series of tubes guy...) was convicted on seven counts of failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from oil companies? Well...in Alaska....apparently that makes them like him more:

I'm not sure if anyone has been paying attention to this at all, but after years of conflicts a rebel group in The Democratic Republic of the Congo has overtaken Virunga National Park which is home to the last population of mountain gorillas in the world. National Geographic aired a special on the situation a few months back but things have gotten worse since then, with the rebels now completely infiltrating the park and forcing all of the rangers out. If you want more information, here are a few links regarding the whole thing. Hopefully there can be a peaceful resolve before more of the gorillas are murdered.

I've heard much talk about getting guns before the gun laws are culled in. Though I seriously doubt anything will happen on the matter.

I love that my most liberal friend own a legit AK-47 that he's modded-out since he got it at a gun show.

He likes the power. It is, like, insane...ly powerful/loud. Well, and insane.

We realized a college-age guy walking onto an outdoor gun range with a personally-modded AK-47 is akin to the guy who drives to a Nascar tailgating party in a modded Honda with undercarriage lights.
In other words, the douchebag of the gun world.

Obama's plans to shut down Guitmo

Interesting article. Glad to see it's a top priority and that he plans on following through with that promise.

Ok so I know that Keith Olbermann thinks a lot of himself, and he's not my favourite guy, but I thought this was great:

Guant

Interesting article on the challenges to come when Obama attempts to shut down Guitmo.

quote:
Originally posted by The Economist: Almost all have been held without charge, without access to lawyers, and without the right (until the Supreme Court’s ruling last June) to challenge their indefinite detention before the American courts. Some 250 remain, of whom around 60 have been cleared for release or transfer to their home countries, but who cannot be let go either because no one is willing to take them or because of the risk of torture or other maltreatment on their return.

Mr Bush has been trying to get foreign governments’ to sign “diplomatic assurances” pledging that the prisoners will be humanely treated.

...irony?

YES! Mission accomplished.

And yeah...well done IL- two in a row, I believe?

Edit: This is a pretty good article on the situation in Zimbabwe, Mugabe, and the current ICC happenings all over Africa. It's relatively promising considering good news rarely comes from that region.
